William (Bill) Cherak

William (Bill) Frank Cherak passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 in the town of Canmore, where he was also born.

Bill will be sadly missed by his sons Stephen (Maureen) and Patrick (Shelagh), grandchildren Trent, Stephana, Nialls, and Michal, along with numerous nephews and nieces.

Eight months earlier, Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years Maxine, and before her, parents Stephen and Julia Cherak, brothers Joe, John, Stan (Arbella), and sister Anne (Henry Ness).

Bill's father Stephen moved to Canmore in 1902 where he worked as a motorman in the Canmore Mines and later became a watchman. His mother Julia was born in Poland and she came to Canmore in 1922.

A testament to his deep roots, Bill started working at the Rundle Mountain Trading Co. Ltd. "groceries & supplies" in 1947, and later became part owner in 1965 along with Edward Niskansen and John Hrushka. Built in 1888, it was one of the first trading posts in the Bow Valley.

Bill's contributions to the town of Canmore are immeasurable. At the age of 94, Bill's life was a tapestry of dedication, service, and joy. He was not only a longstanding resident of Canmore but also a vibrant part of its human history. As a businessperson and an active community member, Bill's presence was always felt and deeply appreciated.

Bill loved playing ice hockey and fishing at Spray Lakes with family and friends. In 1953, both Bill and his brother Stan scored goals in the same hockey game at the old Stampede Corral. Bill also loved golfing. His association with the Canmore Golf and Curling Club is nothing short of legendary. He served on many club committees and as the club's president in 1960 and was a multiple-time club champion, securing titles in 1956, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1967. His leadership was pivotal in developing the golf course and shaping the culture that is cherished at the club today. He was always part of any work party.

Beyond his accomplishments, Bill was known for his captivating storytelling and humour. He could share stories with remarkable detail and wit, of Canmore pioneers who were also his friends, such as his close friend Lawrence Grassi and other community icons.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at The Shrine Church of Our Lady of the Rockies in Canmore on Friday, January 26, 2024. Reception followed at the Canmore Golf & Curling Club where family and friends celebrated Bill's legacy together.
