Wes Hewitt of Canmore passed away in his sleep on Thursday, June 28 2012. He was predeceased by his wife Gwen who passed away April 27, 2012, and is survived by three sons: Scott (Jennifer), Don (Valory) and Ken (Raylene).
Wes was born in Greater Yarmounth, England in 1916. When his father returned from the war, the family emigrated to Canada and settled in Calgary. He attended Crescent Heights high school in Calgary where he first met his future bride, and they married in 1940. The first years of their marriage were "blissfully poor" while Wes worked for Royalite Oil Company in Turner Valley, where Scott was born.
After the war, Wes joined Imperial Oil Limited, and over a career of 30 years worked as a petroleum landman while raising the family in Calgary. With the kids grown and on their own, Wes retired in 1974 when he and Gwen moved to the Shuswap Lake area in BC, where they spent 20 years before returning to live in Canmore in 1994. During this time they travelled extensively to Europe, Africa, South America, New Zealand and Asia.
Mom and Dad celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on April 12, just prior to their 96th birthdays.
A Celebration of Life gathering in honor of Wes and Gwen was held on Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Radisson Hotel on Bow Valley Trail in Canmore.
