Antonius (Ton) Mittertreiner, age 87, passed away peacefully
on Friday, February 14th at the Canmore Hospital surrounded
by his immediate family.
Ton was born to Antonius and Pauline Mittertreiner, the fifth of eight children, in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. He joined the Royal Dutch Airforce at the age of 21 and retired from the service after 33 months as First Lieutenant. Soon thereafter, Ton met his future wife Maria Janssen from Zwolle, the Netherlands, to whom he was married for 45 years.
In 1958 at the age of 25, Ton and Maria immigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton where Ton began articling and Maria resumed her nursing career. By 1963 they had welcomed three children and Ton obtained his Chartered Accountant designation. Ton and Maria embraced the Canadian culture and were proud to receive their Canadian citizenship. They moved to Calgary in 1966 where
Ton eventually served in senior positions in the ski industry
(Sunshine Village, Garibaldi Lifts Ltd) and in sporting goods distribution.
He acquired a hunting and fishing distribution business (Inland Pacific Distributors Ltd.) which he ran successfully for 13 years.
After selling his business in 1998, he and Maria enjoyed their retirement years in Canmore and Sicamous. Maria passed away in 2003 and continues to be cherished by all who knew her.
In 2007 Beverly Henderson, a well loved and long-time family friend became Ton's loving partner. They enjoyed many happy years of travel and adventure together before Ton's cancer diagnosis in 2018. Bev's devoted care and attention throughout Ton's illness will be forever appreciated by the family.
Ton loved to spend time at the lake, as well as traveling, keeping fit, and maintaining his beautiful fishpond. He had a great intellectual curiosity and could always be found with book or newspaper in hand. Amazingly, Ton continued to ski until his early eighties, which surprised no one that knew him. Ton's exceptional generosity, kindness, tremendous sense of humour and love of adventure will continue to inspire and be appreciated by all that knew him. He did it his way. We will all miss his infectious laugh and unique wit.
He will be forever missed by his loving partner Beverly Henderson, his daughter Doreen Vanderzyde (Bruce) and their children Chanel (fiancé Jonathan Jelinek) and Thomas, son Phil Mittertreiner (Jan Donald) and their son Devin, son Quincy Mittertreiner (fiancée Ruth Santosham), Quincy's daughter Alana, as well as Beverly's sons Terry (Ardith), Bev's granddaughters Emma and Kate, and Bev's son Leigh and partner Bruce. Ton was predeceased by his wife Maria, brother Johan and recently by sisters Engeline and Jose. He is survived by brothers Frans, Peter, Paul and Fons.
The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the staff of the Canmore General Hospital for their kind care and support.
Interment will be next to Maria in the Canmore cemetery at a later date. Those who wish to donate in Ton's memory are kindly directed to www.giving.alberta.ca/donate/cancer-centres
