Thomas Brown, born February 23, 1909 in Aberdeen, Scotland, passed away peacefully with family by his side in Banff on July 1, 2011 at the wonderful age of 102 years.
Predeceased in 1976 by his loving wife Coy, Tom is survived by his son
Leland (Dianne) Brown in Banff, two granddaughters, Stacey (Dean) Corrigan and great grandchildren Connor and Meagan in Banff and Lori (John Thibault) and great granddaughter Chloe of Cochrane.
Tom came to Canada from Scotland in 1926 at the age of 17, landing in Halifax. He took the train across Canada to work on his aunt and uncle's farm in Hussar, AB until 1932 at which time he went back to Scotland to visit his family. He returned to Canada in 1933 and took work on Matthews Highland Stock Farm west of Calgary and worked there until 1939. While there he met and married Coy, leaving the ranch to go trucking in Dog Pound AB until 1944 when they moved to Banff, which would become their home for the rest of their lives.
While in Banff, Tom drove gas truck for the Brewster's and in the early 50's worked for Burt Johnson at the B.A. bulk station before going back to work for the Brewster's managing the Columbia Ice field Chalets for six years. In 1961 Tom and Coy bought Mountain View Bungalows which they operated until 1969 when Tom "semi-retired" and drove bus, again for Brewster's
Tom was a devoted Mason joining the lodge in 1946. He remained active in the lodge for over sixty years and received an honorary life membership. He was master of the lodge in 1956, 1972 and 1991 as well as being officer of the lodge for twenty two years. He was also an officer of the grand lodge, a Shriner and a member of the Royal Arch.
The family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to Jo and the wonderful staff at Cascade House and all the nurses and support staff, both past and present, at St. Martha's Place and the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital. Also to Dr. Ian MacDonald and the staff at the Alpine Clinic and more recently to Dr. Lynn Marriott. Your exceptional friendship, love and care for Tom and his family will always be remembered with gratitude.
A private burial has taken place, where Tom now rests with Coy.
A memorial service for Tom will be announced at a later date.
