Tim Auger passed away at Banff Mineral Springs hospital early in the morning of August 10, 2018 at the age of 72. Sherry, his lifelong partner of 46 years and Corey their son were there for his final hours.
Tim was born in Toronto, but the family moved to Winnipeg a few years later, and eventually Vancouver when he was a teenager. Following high school, Tim attended UBC graduating with an Arts degree. The buildings at UBC and the nearby granite cliffs of Squamish are where he discovered his love of climbing. This passion defined the rest of his life. Tim completed the second ascent of the Grand Wall in Squamish in 1964 and the first ascent of the University Wall. Tim and Sherry met in 1972 at Lake O'Hara and married in 1975. Corey was born in Canmore in 1979.
Tim's first job with Parks Canada was with the trail crew at Lake O'Hara in 1967. He then went on to spend six years as a seasonal warden.
In 1975, his job took him to Banff where his background as a strong climber made him an ideal candidate for the search and rescue program. He spent his career as a park warden in Banff National Park as supervisor in the mountain rescue and avalanche programs. Tim retired in 2004. During his career he helped countless people. His calm professional demeanor, and amazing leadership skills in the most gripping situations were appreciated by everyone.
Tim's passion for climbing continued into his 60's. He was a bold and talented climber and has left a legacy of notable routes both in the Rockies and Squamish. He participated in the birth of waterfall ice climbing in Canada with first ascents of Bourgeau Right and
Left-Hand routes. Tim made numerous ascents of Mt. Louis, one
of his favourite mountains.
Internationally, he climbed the South Ridge of Pumori in Nepal and
was a member of the Canadian Mount Everest Expedition of 1982.
Tim received the Summit of Excellence award from the Banff Centre in 1996 and has been an honorary member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides since 2014. His family, friends, the mountains, and the Warden Service, were his love. Whether you had just met him or known him for years, he treated everyone with kindness and respect. He was always patient and good humoured. Tim loved to tell stories and his tales were legendary.
Tim is survived by his wife Sherry, his son Corey Auger (Kristin), grandchildren Nolan, Jude, Summer and his brother Barry Auger.
The family will be holding a private event.
