Sylvia Goeres passed away peacefully at the Golden Eagle View Lodge in Canmore, Alberta. She was predeceased by her three brothers and husband Ray in 2007. She is survived by her three children, Patrick (Sandy), Brian & Brenda; grandchildren Andrew (Jen) & Laurel; and twin great grandchildren, Cole and Emily.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Golden Eagle View for their excellent and loving care of Sylvia through her stay and in her final days.
Sylvia was born 92 years ago in Trysil, Norway. At age one, she immigrated to Canada with her parents and brothers Henry,
Trygve and Leif.
The family endured a tough time farming during the Depression, and following their parents' early deaths, Leif and Sylvia went to foster care in Moose Jaw. Later, when working as a riveter at Prairie Airways, Sylvia was introduced to young RCAF pilot Ray by his sister, a co-worker of hers. They married and the years followed with Ray's various R.C.A.F. postings in Europe and Canada, and later - exotic travels when Ray was a commercial pilot. She was an incredible mother and shouldered much of the load raising the family, as Ray's busy schedule kept him away from home often.
They relocated from Calgary to Harvie Heights in the 1970s where they loved entertaining, and watching the sunsets from their beloved deck with Sylvia enjoying a rum-coke and a cigarette.
Sylvia was a wonderful cook and she and Raymond enjoyed entertaining. On many occasions friends or acquaintances arriving unexpectedly were always welcomed in.
Never a dull moment with Sylvia – one Stampede she got our table in a little hot water while at the Trade Winds Tavern, after shooting innocent patrons with her hidden water pistol. She was an avid bridge player, loved the casinos and enjoyed having flowers around.
Sylvia was a special human being and will be missed greatly. Her generosity to whomever came in contact with her will certainly be remembered.
Flowers declined but donations gratefully accepted in Sylvia's memory, for the Dementia or Music Therapy funds at the Golden Eagle View. http://canmorehealthfoundation.com/donate-now/
Cremation has now taken place.
A private family gathering will take place later in the year.
For Sylvia and all other mothers …:
Your mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street. She's the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colours of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She's the place you came from, your fist home, and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love, you first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you.
Not time, not space … not even death.
