Stan Wingfield

d. October 21, 2015

Stanley Thomas Wingfield passed away peacefully October 21, 2015 at the Canmore Hospital with family by his side. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Jeannette, (Therrien), sons Stan jr. and Steven, (wife Sylvie, sons Carl and Jonathan), and daughter Susie, (husband Dave, sons Dexter and Morgan). He was a kind, generous, loving humanitarian who not only looked out for others, but he and Jeanette took them into their home.

Born and raised in Montreal, the youngest of seven, he spent his remaining years with family in Canmore. At sixteen he sailed the world as a Canadian Merchant Marine during World War II, and although he only finished grade three, with the encouragement of an older sailor, he was self-educated and spoke English, French and Spanish. He was an activist with the Canadian Seaman's Union, (CSU), and in 1949 it resulted in a worldwide strike. In later years as Director of the Canadian Merchant Marines, he helped secure veterans rights for those remaining sailors. He continued with his humanitarian activities by organizing Citizens for Peace and Labour Day rallies in Montreal and Vancouver. He assisted in publishing the social history of the Canadian Seaman's Union and came up with the title, "Against the Tide". Stan believed in always contributing and worked in the mines, forestry and finished his working career as a Stationary Engineer, first class with Air Canada.

Perhaps the only thing stronger than his belief in his fellow man, was his booming baritone voice that he freely shared with others. He was a compassionate, loving and fair husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and mentor; a man whose morals and integrity we could all strive for.

We all thank Dr. Quinlan and the wonderful staff of the Canmore Hospital. Donations if you wish to the Alzheimer's Society of Calgary, 201 - 222 - 58 Avenue SW, Calgary AB, T2H 2S3.
