Sidney John Smith Brass, born Ellibister, Cottage Parish of Rendall, Orkney Islands, Scotland. He was the second twin and arrived two hours after his sister Mabel !
Born to farming folks he worked at home. In 1942 he met the love of his life, Helen, and three months later they were married. Sid continued in farming. For a period, he managed a sand and gravel quarry, and later they became Inn Keepers at the Tower Hotel, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1981 recession hit Scotland and they decided to immigrate to Canada to be with their children.
Canmore became home to them where they managed the Nurse's Residence. Sid was a seasonal worker at Bow Valley Provincial Park where he proudly told everyone, "I'm Sid Brass and I cut grass". During the 1988 Winter Olympics he was a volunteer and drove shuttle to the Nordic Center. Six years ago he experienced ill health for the first time in his life and in June of 2006 he moved to Golden Eagle View. He fought death on numerous occasions but on the March 14, 2011 his body could fight no longer
Left to grieve are his wife Helen, of nearly 69 years (Banff long term care), son Michael (Sharon) Brass, Lone Butte BC, Kevin, Glenn (Kerri), Chilliwack BC; daughter Maureen Brass, Sorrento BC, Elliot (Gabriella), Squamish BC, Cameron (Lacey-Lee), New Westminster BC. Amber and Holly Gibson, Edmonton AB. Numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Australia and Scotland.
A private gathering will be held in the spring to celebrate his life.
