Shirley Peatfield

d. December 2, 2014

Shirley Agnes Mary Peatfield passed away peacefully at the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, surrounded by her family in the early morning of December 2, 2014.

Shirley was born on July 27,1928 right here in Banff, the place she loved and treasured all of her life. Her family dates back to Banff's very beginnings and helped sculpt this area into the amazing place it is. Shirley was the oldest of three siblings and it fell to her to help care and raise them, this upbringing built her into an incredibly generous, giving person and a natural Mother figure.

Always active in many clubs and organizations it was in a bowling league that Shirley met the love of her life, John Peatfield, who she married on December 29, 1951. On January 8,1954 Shirley and John were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Mary Louise.

Shirley and John continued to be active in the community for their entire lives; they were instrumental in the Banff Curling Club and members of the Banff Springs Golf Club. Two of Shirley's greatest passions were being a member of the Mount Temple IODE and being on the Parish Council at St. Georges in the Pines Anglican Church. Constantly baking (her mince meat tarts and pies will be missed) for a fundraiser or reception, knitting her special hats, sweaters and teddy bears, selling hot dogs throughout the summer and helping organize the many weddings at the church, Shirley was always ready to lend a hand wherever and whenever it was needed.

An avid sports fan Shirley was happy to see the Stampeders win the Grey Cup and was excited to watch a great hockey game (always rooting for the Calgary Flames of course) or coaching her daughters curling team on how to improve their game.

Shirley's greatest joy in life was being with her family, whether it was a summer get together in the back yard surrounded by her beautiful flower garden or a warm dinner during the cold winter months. Nothing brought her more joy then being among her family and close friends. Shirley was their biggest supporter and the loudest cheering section in everything they did.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Mary Louise (Brian Ford), grandchildren Robert (Robyn Poupart) and Christine (Ian Kaufmann), sister Lorraine (Ken Clay) and her cousin and friend Ginger (Winston Baines) and many amazing friends and loved ones who will

miss her terribly. Shirley was predeceased by her husband John, brother Ralph and sister Vivian.

There was a public memorial service held Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Georges in the Pines Anglican Church in Banff followed by a reception which was held at the Banff Royal Canadian Legion.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Shirley may make a donation, in her memory, to either the Mt. Temple IODE (Box 3099, Banff, AB, T1L 1C7)or to St. Georges in the Pines Anglican Church Historical Restoration (Box 309, Banff, AB T1L 1A4).
