After a long, courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Scott Fraser at noon on Saturday,
December 14, 2013 in Canmore, Alberta. He was 51 years old. Predeceased by father Jack Fraser and brother Bruce Fraser, Scott is survived by his mother Claire Fraser, brother Kurt Fraser, sisters Marilyn and Cyd Fraser.
Cross-country skiing was, to say the least, a big part of Scott's life. He started at a young age with the TEST program under Brian Hunt, Selwyn Hughes and Father Mouchet, along with his siblings. He was an accomplished member of the first Whitehorse (Yukon) Cross-country Ski Team formed in 1980. During his post-secondary education in the mid-late 1980's Scott skied for University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Once achieving his Civil Engineer Degree he took up what became his life long career with the Government of the Yukon in Highway Department of which his last role was Yukon Government Bridge Inspector. All colleagues spoke with great respect and admiration for Scott's mindful attention to detail.
Scott dedicated many hours as an athlete, volunteer, and coach in Yukon's biathlon program through the 1990's and well into the new Millennium. His skiing did not stop there. He was part of the team to summit Mount Logan with Grant Meekins and Isabelle Dube in 1996. He joined in a few of the famous Peter Heebink treks across the north… one in particular wearing the old red and yellow Salomon racing boots! Eventually he found himself leading his own ski trips. From 2004-2011 his love of adventure and X country skiing combined into attending the World Master's with his sister Cyd where he continued to meet many kindred spirits. During all this time we cannot miss speaking of his delight in taking up Alpine Touring Skiing in the back country. All types of skiing were enjoyed by Scott and as long as he had an adventure in the works by Wednesday he would secure his team by Friday and be executing early Saturday morning… He enjoyed closing the adventures with the Sauna and he loved using Eucalyptus oil on the sauna rocks - the pleasant, distinctive aroma was a sure sign that Scott had been for a ski.
He was a well-rounded adventurer with a drive for mountain biking, running, paddling and sailing. He embraced the opportunity to be in the company of such famous adventures as Peter Steele and Monty Alford.
His eclectic side brought his love of read, intellect, music and playing the guitar which endeared us all to him especially those he was swooning! His pastime of painting, drawing merged with his self-study of plants, birds which was with him to the very end.
Scott was not easy to know but will be remembered for his antics, his conversations that were a bit Cryptic with long pauses!, spontaneous sense of humour, keen sense of adventure and his passion and devotion to Sport. He will be dearly missed.
ROADS go ever ever on,
Over ROCK and under TREE,
By CAVES where never SUN has shone,
By STREAMS that never find the SEA;
Over SNOW by WINTER sown,
And through the merry FLOWERS of June,
Over GRASS and over STONE,
And under MOUNTAINS in the moon.
Roads go ever ever on,
Under CLOUD and under STAR.
Yet feet that WANDERING have gone
Turn at last to HOME afar.
Eyes that FIRE and sword have seen,
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on MEADOWS green,
And TREES and HILLS they long have known.
The ROAD goes ever on and on
Down from the door WHERE IT BEGAN.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I MUST FOLLOW, if I can,
Pursuing it with EAGER feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many PATHS and errands MEET.
The Road goes ever ON AND ON
Down from the door where it began.
NOW FAR AHEAD the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
PURSUING it with weary feet,
Until it joins SOME LARGER WAY,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the ROAD HAS GONE.
Let OTHERS FOLLOW, if they can!
Let them a JOURNEY NEW Begin.
But I at last with weary feet
WILL TURN towards the lighted inn,
MY EVENING - REST and sleep to meet.
Still 'round the corner there may wait
A NEW road or SECRET GATE;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A DAY will come at last when I
Shall TAKE the hidden paths that RUN
West of the MOON, East of the SUN.
Roads go ever on, under CLOUD and under STAR…
