Roswitha Gabriele Knudsen passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018, three days short of her 99th birthday. Rose was born in Rostock, Germany and fled to Switzerland with her family before the outbreak of World War II, where she worked as a nurse both during and after the war. She loved hiking in the Swiss Alps and it was while doing so that she met the love of her life, an American scientist, Arthur Knudsen, and they married in 1960. They moved to the United States and in 1962 on to Calgary where Art began work in the Physics Department at the fledgling University of Calgary.
Rose and Art built a home in the Bearspaw area, doing much of the work themselves, and spent many weekends pursuing their love of hiking in the nearby mountains. In 1984 Art died and Rose returned for a short time to Switzerland but the Rockies called her back and she settled in Canmore, where she lived until her passing.
Besides her husband, Rose was predeceased by her parents and siblings but leaves behind many dear and long time friends, including those who were like family to her at the Bow River Lodge and who will miss her intelligence on a wide variety of subjects, her strength and determination and her graciousness. Many thanks to the staff of the Lodge and Ridgeview Medical Clinic for their caring attention
and to the nurses, doctors and staff at the gem of the Alberta health care system, the Canmore Hospital, for their compassion during
Rose's short stay there.
A Celebration of Roswitha's life was held at the Bow River Lodge on Monday, January 29, 2018. Interment will take place in the family plot in Schaffhausen, Switzerland at a later date.
