Robert (Bob) Macgillivray

d. February 2, 2011

Robert "Bob" Clyde MacGillivray, beloved son of Audrey I. MacGillivray of Victoria, BC., entered into rest February 2, 2011 at the age of 59.

Bob also leaves to cherish his memory, his older brother, Roger (Dianna) MacGillivray of Armstrong, BC. and sister Linda (Neil) Smyth of Three Hills, AB. Bob was predeceased in 1991 by his father, John Onlsow MacGillivray and in 2008 by his eldest brother, Terry John MacGillivray.

Bob was born April 4, 1951 in Ottawa and the family moved to Banff in 1954. Bob grew up in Banff and many of his friends affectionately called him "MaGoo". He enjoyed skiing as a youngster and 'packing' the slopes at Mt. Norquay long before automated equipment was used to pack the base. He also enjoyed fly fishing in summer and ice fishing in winter in the many streams, rivers and lakes and in speaking to him, you were very likely to hear one of his famous "foosh" stories!

He worked on many stone and masonry projects in the Banff and Canmore area including major projects such as the restoration of the Bow River Bridge, The Bus Depot, the Archway that joins the Banff Springs Hotel and the Annex and the Cave & Basin. Bob was also a volunteer fire fighter and was recruited to help contain several forest fires including the Storm Mountain Fire on Highway 93. Bob also helped clear the roads to the Sunshine and Panarama ski hills when they opened up. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #26 in Banff and together with his Mom and Dad, brought home many trophies from the Dart tourneys.

Bob moved to Sidney, BC. in the latter part of the 80's and continued his stone masonry on the Island for a time until his eyes and health started to fail. Bob was diagnosed with Stargartz Disease and was registered with the CNIB. Bob later moved to the Greater Victoria area and lived there until his death.

Bob will fondly be remembered for his gracious heart as big as the mountains he loved, his loyalty to his family, friends, his humor, stories and his admiration and respect of all natures splendors.

A memorial service was held at St. George's-in-the-Pines Anglican Church, Banff, June 17, 2011.

Luncheon followed at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Friends wishing to remember Bob may make donations, in his memory to S.T.A.R.S or Canadian Guide Dogs For The Blind, Box 280, Manotick, ON K4M 1A3.
