Saturday morning, life ended peacefully for our beloved husband,
father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Richard Schultz, with
his son by his side.
Richard was born to ethnic German parents in a small village in Ukraine. He was the third eldest of four children. Early life was difficult as WWII forced his family to flee Ukraine to Poland and finally repatriate in Germany.
While in Germany, Richard earned his carpentry ticket and in 1953, he immigrated to Canada to join his brother Sam in Edmonton. Here he used his skills to become a home builder during which time he met his wife of 62 years, Gertrud, and lifelong friends. Richard became a successful hotelier, most often partnering with his brother Sam, with ventures throughout locations in Alberta culminating in a busy and beautiful life in Banff.
After retirement, Richard and Gertrud enjoyed traveling to many countries on all seven continents often with close friends. Richard was a family man who loved watching his grandchildren, and later his great grandchildren, grow and flourish. He was an avid golfer with impressive putting skills. Always keen for a good time, he loved to challenge his friends to a game of cards.
Richard was predeceased by his sister, Elsa (Rudolf), brother Sam and niece, Betty. He is survived by his wife Gertrud, son Gary (Mary), daughter, Karen (David), and grandchildren, Steven (Mary), Erika (Alex) and Lauren (Justin) as well as his great grandchildren, Sophia, Theo, and Blair.
When thinking of Richard, toast to his wonderful life with his favourite beverage, rye and coke. Richard celebrated many milestone birthdays and anniversaries with large celebrations with friends and family. His wishes in passing were to be cremated and celebrated at a private family gathering.
Family acknowledges and appreciates the wonderful care he received from all the staff at St. Martha's Place, the Mineral Springs Hospital, and from Dr. Shigeishi and Dr. Clem. How fortunate he was to pass in his beloved town of Banff, looking out to the forest and Bow River.
