We are deeply saddened to announce that, after flu-like symptoms became a full-blown chest infection in a matter of hours, Reid Robertson Sandford passed away at his home in Calgary at the age of 27 years.
Born in Banff, raised in Canmore, Reid attended Canadian Rockies Public Schools from K-12. Reid was the eldest son of Bob and Vi Sandford of Canmore, and big brother to Landon and Amery. He is also survived by one grandma, aunts, uncles, and extended family in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
Many will remember Reid as a thoughtful, observant, funny, generous, caring and courteous young man, whose company was a pleasure and a joy. Others will remember him as a respected "always there for you" friend who seemed to have a "radar" for the needs of those he cared about. Reid's greatest interest and most satisfying accomplishments were in sports. He loved hockey, and also played and coached football and baseball. In every sport he played, Reid was a fierce competitor and committed team player whose passion inspired enthusiasm and excellence in others. While Reid was renowned for his encyclopaedic knowledge of sports, he also read widely, including books by his favourite author Dan Brown. He paid close attention to the news, and held informed and highly considered views on contemporary social and political issues, which he could intelligently and enthusiastically discuss with just about anyone. His bull's eye documentary film recommendations, and insightful and witty observations on the worries, wrongs and wars in the world will be greatly missed.
Reid was a loving son, brother and good friend, whose passing will be keenly felt by his entire family and those whose lives he touched. He was a wonderful, loving soul who will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Reid's life took place in the Sports Bar at Patrinos Steak House and Pub, 1602 Bow Valley Trail in Canmore, AB
on Monday, August 29th, 2016. Those who attended were invited to wear their favourite hockey, football or baseball jersey, or Reid's favourite colour: Red.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation, in his memory, to Kidsport Alberta - Bow Valley Chapter, Box 40007, Canmore, AB T1W 3H9 www.kidsportcanada.ca/alberta/bow-valley
