In the early morning on Monday, Nick passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary after a lengthy illness due to congestive heart failure complications.
Nick is survived by his loving wife Shirley, whom he married 52 years ago. He is also survived by his son Nicholas, jr (Kathy) and grandchildren Alexandra and Christopher; by his sister Lillian (Peter) and nieces Denise (Took) and their children MacKenzie and Jasper, and his brother Fred and nephew Jonathon. Nick was predeceased by his mother Ann and father Matt.
Nick was born and raised in the Rossburn / Angusville area in Manitoba. He helped raise his siblings and cousin on their farm in the aftermath of the depression. In his early 20's he went to Yellowknife to work for Giant Goldmines for 5 years. Then he went to work at Thompson, Manitoba at International Nickel Co for sixteen years. During this time, he married Shirley in 1961. In 1976 Nick and Shirley moved to Fort MacMurray to work in the oilsands with Syncrude Canada Ltd. He worked there for 22 years and then retired in 1998 to Canmore.
Nick loved the beauty of the mountains and was buried in the
Canmore Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family was held
on Thursday, September 19, 2013 in St Michael's Anglican Church in Canmore.
He loved nature and animals and was an active member of Bow Valley Clean Air Society and a volunteer for Parks Canada. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to remember Nick may make a donation, in his memory to the Bow Valley SPCA, PO Box 8154, Canmore, AB T1W 2T9
