Nettie Smith

d. March 24, 2015

It is with deepest sadness that the family of Nettie Viola Smith

(nee Kessler) announces the passing of our beloved Mother, Nana, Great-grandmother, Sister and Aunt on Tuesday March 24, 2015

at the age of 99 years.

Nettie was born in Weyburn, and grew up on a farm in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan. She lived most of her life in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Orton Smith on November 23, 2001 having been married for 67 years. At the age of 89, in 2005, Nettie moved to Calgary, Alberta to be closer to two of her three children. She enjoyed many years at The Lodge at Valley Ridge. Three or four Bridge games a week were her main delight. Her prowess was renowned.

Nettie is survived by her three children, Sharon Treppel, Velma (Paul) Adams, and Roy(Sherry) Smith; eight grandchildren, Diane Treppel, David (Judy) Treppel, Donald (Shelly) Treppel, Darrel Treppel, Stephen (Athena) Adams, Veronica Smith(Ron), Catherine Smith, and Gary Smith; and three step-grandchildren, Marc Adams, Rochelle Adams(Don), and Robert Adams; several great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.

Nettie was the second eldest of ten children. Two siblings survive her, Ethel Rhodes of Prince George, BC, and Roland Kessler of Medicine Hat, Alberta. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Olive Coupland of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

During her years in Regina, Nettie was very active in Lakeview United Church. She also operated a popular retail business, Renette's Boutique with her partner and dear friend Irene Tidball, for 25 years.

With such a busy life she still had time to do amazing handiwork. Her children and grandchildren will enjoy her beautiful needlepoint for years to come. Her flower gardens were amazing. Even at Valley Ridge her balcony bloomed spectacularly from Spring to Fall.

A memorial service was held in Regina on Saturday, May 16, 2015

in Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Ave. Interment followed in Riverside Memorial Park where she was laid to rest with Al.

The family wish to thank Nettie's caregivers at the Bowcrest Care Centre, including Dr. Todd, and Dr. G. Duggleby in Canmore.
