Michelle Wiebe

Michelle was born in Queensland, Australia and grew up on a pineapple farm. She studied nursing in Brisbane, a profession she found very rewarding and one she pursued with great passion and commitment. Michelle then moved to Canberra to work, and it was there she discovered the joys of winter sports. Yearning to experience a true winter, she left for the Swiss Alps. To fund her passion for skiing, Michelle worked in London and in between did the obligatory backpacking trip around Europe.

So how did the girl from the pineapple farm end up in Canmore?

Michelle came to Canmore to be with the love of her life, Jim, and immediately also fell in love with the Rockies. A perfect day for them was paddling down the Bow River in the splendid surrounds of the mountains. And if Canmore wasn't wintery enough, Jim and Michelle headed off to Baffin Island for a working stint. Not long after that, the next stop was Whitehorse, and then it was back to Michelle's childhood home in Australia where she completed her Midwifery certification.

The undisputable draw of the Rockies had Michelle and Jim back in Canmore in 1993, this time to set down roots and build their home on the edge of Spring Creek. Michelle worked in all areas of the Canmore hospital, most recently she specialized in Operating Room nursing.

Away from work, Michelle loved being outdoors, making the most of what her new home had to offer; canoeing, hiking, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding and biking. So what do you do in winter when the sun goes down in Canmore? Curling!! Michelle thrived on this truly Canadian sport, she was involved in the Curling club for 15 years, and in the most recent years as an Executive member with a vision to make the club as fun and as vibrant as possible.

Jim and Michelle made it their mission to give friends and family the same outdoor adventures they cherished. They gave special attention to their nephew and four nieces, introducing them to white water canoeing, sea kayaking, alpine touring, and back country camping. These shared experiences will leave lasting memories with all.

Jim would like express heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the staff at the Canmore Hospital and Community Care.

Instead of flowers please consider a donation to the Cancer Research Society in hope of finding a cure.
