Michael Gerald McTaggart (Shorty), born in Londonderry, Ireland came to Winter, Saskatchewan where he spent his childhood on the farm. Michael joined the Canadian Army at the age of 19 and served in the Black Watch during WWII. After the war he moved to Banff where he met his wife Jenny and later moved to Exshaw. Michael lived in Exshaw where he raised his family and worked at the LaFarge plant for a total of 38 years, primarily in the quarry. He was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Exshaw Branch 179. This long-time resident of Exshaw and short time resident of Canmore, passed away peacefully in the Canmore Hospital, four days short of his 90th birthday.
Michael is survived by his son Michael (Bonny); two daughters, Darlene and Donna (Ian) Niemi, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, along with numerous grand dogs. He is also survived by two brothers, Chuck (Marilyn) and Joey (Mary); one sister Ellen and his sister-in-law Fran McTaggart. He was predeceased by his wife Jenny (Lakusta), mother Ellen, father Daniel, four brothers Daniel, Edward, Louie and Stanley.
Funeral Service was held on Friday, May 10, 2013
in St. Michael's Anglican Church in Canmore. Interment followed in the Field of Honor in the Canmore Cemetery.
Flowers gratefully declined. Friends wishing to remember Michael (Shorty) may make donations, in his memory, to the Poppy Fund through any Royal Canadian Legion Branch.
