Doris Mary Riva, "Auntie May" passed away peacefully on June 10, 2012 just 22 days short of her 95th birthday. Predeceased by her mother (Doris) in 1968 and her father John in 1969, her brothers Joe in 1981, Ernie in 1975 and sister Francis in 2001 as well as her special friend Dorothy Baroni in 2010. May is survived by numerous family and friends throughout the world.
May was an honored citizen of Canmore all of her life. Born here, she was active in the community all of her life and was more recently recognized with a Citizen of the Year Honor and has a park in Canmore named in her honor, the May Riva Community Park. May was many things to many people, but everyone considered her their friend.
Special thanks to the staff and residents at the Canmore Lodge where she lived since 1975 and to Dr. John Michalyshyn and nurses and staff at the Canmore Hospital. Also to Hilda Straw, the Petrie family, the Lewis family and to the Rev. Betty Piwowar for being there for May.
Funeral service was held on Friday, June 15, 2012 in St. Michael's Anglican Church, 709 – 7 Street in Canmore. Cremation followed the service and May will be laid to rest with her mother, father and sister at a later date in the Canmore Cemetery.
Friends wishing to remember May, may make donations, in her memory, to the Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation, 1100 Hospital Place, Canmore T1W 1N2; or to the Royal Canadian Legion, Three Sisters Branch #3 for use in the community.
