Mary Garnham Andrews, born in Montreal, was a leading Canadian weaver and gifted teacher. She first discovered that she was
a natural weaver while she was a Senior Counsellor at the Taylor Stratten Camp in Algonquin Park in the early 1940's. She went on
to study weaving in Korea and Japan while serving with the
Canadian Red Cross.
Mary served as the Director of Handicrafts for the Grenfell Labrador Medical Mission for six years and worked for the Ontario YWCA as the Director of Handicrafts, before coming to Banff in 1962 to set up the weaving studio in the Textile Department at the Banff School of Fine Arts. She continued to teach weaving there for the next 15 years and, in 1972, she was awarded by Master Weaver Certificate by the Guild of Canadian Weavers.
Mary passed away peacefully in Banff at the age of 102 years.
As was her expressed wish, no funeral service will be held.
