Marlis Anni Hoar (Eckert) passed away peacefully in her home in Canmore, Alberta.
She was born in Hanover, Germany to Herman Eckert and Minna Jordan. Marlis had two siblings, Wolfgang "Walter" (Gudrun) Eckert,
and Heidemarie (Horst) Langer.
Marlis liked to tell the story of how she one day spied a handsome
army fellow crossing the street in Hanover. She took him around Germany in her motorcycle. That young man turned out to be her
future husband. Marlis and Donald Hoar were married in Germany
on November 7, 1953.
Donald served in the Army (Black Watch and PPCLI) they were
posted to Germany before returning to Canada with their family.
The Hoar's were posted in New Brunswick and Germany and
finally Calgary in 1969.
Once her youngest was attending school full-time, Marlis resumed working outside the home, she worked at Woolworth's and later worked at Foothills Hospital and then at SAIT in the chemistry department.
She was an accomplished painter (watercolours and oil), an excellent seamstress, and a fabulous and prolific knitter. Her family members were the lucky recipients of many of her creations. She was a German trained chocolatier and made the best fudge. Marlis' green thumb was evident in both her garden patch in Calgary and her condo balcony in Canmore. She was a home baker, wine maker and expert jam and jelly maker, skating costumer and even re-upholstered her own furniture.
Despite working full time and caring for her family, Marlis also found time for other pursuits. She loved swimming and still swam laps two to three days per week at the time of her passing. She loved the outdoors and relished her daily walks with her beloved dog, Bucky. Living close to the mountains had been one of her dreams, and often referred to Canmore as being "Heaven". But reading was one of her great loves and she always had a book on the go.
While living in Calgary, Marlis and Don were members of the Inglewood Golf and Curling Club. She loved playing golf with her husband, her family and friends and although she started late in life, she was still able to achieve several tournament wins. Marlis and Donald also did quite a bit of travelling during their marriage. They visited Germany, West Indies, England, Spain, Mexico, Hawaii as well as northern Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Manitoba.
Marlis is survived by her children: Kim (Filomena Martins) Babette (Jon) Trives, and Brent (Lori Mackedenski). Six grandchildren:
Ricardo (Joanne Penner) Hoar, Vanita (Jason) Svenningsen, Lasha Mackedenski, Gordon, Benjamin (deceased) and Jacob Hoar. She also had four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Marlis was predeceased by her husband Donald, her parents,
brother Walter, brother- in -law Horst Langer and infant grandson, Benjamin Hoar.
She wished her family to know "I love all of you and thank you".
In accordance with Marlis' wishes, cremation has taken place,
and there will be no funeral services.
