Marjorie was born July 29, 1922 in Toronto, Ontario and passed away in Canmore, Alberta on September 23, 2012. Raised during the Depression, Marjorie was an independent woman long before it was commonplace. Early in her 38-year career with Imperial Oil (Esso) she transferred from Toronto to Imperial's offices in Coral Gables, Florida. In 1954 she took another venturesome transfer, this time to Esso in Calgary, where she quickly rose to be an executive secretary. Marjorie retired from Esso in 1982.
She met James "Mac" Moir at a Banff Book Discussion weekend and they married in 1965. With their love for the "grand and glorious west" Mac and Marjorie settled in the Mount Royal neighbourhood of Calgary, but they also spent much time enjoying summer and winter activities in the Rockies, especially after they built their chalet in Canmore in 1981. After Mac died in 1997, Marjorie moved to Canmore permanently, where she embraced all the town has to offer, belonging to the Mountain Cabin Quilters' Guild the Canmore Seniors' Association, the Meanderthals hiking group, and the Red Hat Society, and being an avid patron of the Canmore Library. Dogs were an important part of Marjorie's life. Walks with her beloved Becky were social events, always meeting neighbours and other dog walkers along the way, and making instant friends with humans and dogs alike.
Marjorie was a role model to family and friends with her active lifestyle—she continued to hike, ski, and snowshoe well into her eighties. Returning to the family cottage on Lake Couchiching, Ontario, she delighted in watching the generations of Hunts continue the traditions of family gatherings and water fun. On her 89th birthday she joined her grandnieces and grandnephews and went sea-dooing! Marjorie had a straightforward personality and did not hesitate to let people know what she thought. Her family delighted in her spunk and lovingly accepted her opinions. An accomplished quilter, Marjorie's creativity won the Viewers' Choice Award at the 2007 and 2008 Mountain Cabin Quilters' Guild Annual Shows. Marjorie was generous and loved hosting get-togethers for family and friends, and she regularly invited her fun-loving group of long-time friends known as "The Committee", as well as friends from the Esso Resources Annuitant Club and the Calgary Snowshoe Club, to enjoy the hospitality of her chalet.
