Margot Roberge

d. June 20, 2018

Long time Banff resident Margot (Margo, Margie) Roberge passed away peacefully on June 20th, 2018 in St. Martha's Place at The Banff Mineral Springs Hospital in her 96th year.

She was born to Anton (Tony) Magnus Sorensen and Ane Marie Thygesen (Mama Sorensen) in Silkeborg, Denmark. She was their second daughter following her sister Erna by 11 years.

While still very young and living in Denmark, Margot's father came to Canada and moved to the Calgary area finding employment in his trade of master carpenter. When old enough to make the journey, at age 2, she as well moved to Canada with her sister and mother. In 1928 the family moved to Banff seasonally, and Margot began school here in grade 5 in 1933 when they moved permanently. Shortly thereafter Margot's father took over an abandoned building on Bear Street which was to become The Pearl Laundry. The Sorensen family with their in laws were to operate this business for 40 years with Margot always being active in the business when needed. In later years Margot was also active in the retail business and hospitality industries in Banff.

She even did a four-year tour in her son's restaurant The Yard, where she prepared all the desserts and baked goods. She was always an exceptional cook and continued to spend many hours in her kitchen until in her 90s.

In 1948 Margot married her husband of 69 years Bill Roberge.

In 1953 she gave birth to their only child Michael Brian.

Margot was an active curler, bowler, bridge player, and entertainer with her and Bill's many friends and relatives. They spent many years together travelling with The Banff Kinsmen Club which they were highly involved in and met people from all over Canada. Her gal pals were always very special to her and she spent much of her free time with them playing cards and going on outings with them. There was always a drink and some snackies at the Roberge residence for any friends, family, or travelers that may come by. She will always be remembered for her warmth and kindness to family and friends alike. An avid animal lover, she could be often seen in town walking one of her black miniature poodles Spike, Rudy, or Inky.

She is survived by her son Mike, daughter in law Wilma, sister in law Marion Roberge, god daughter Holly Jack, nieces and nephews Susan Jakubiz, Lois Cosman, Allison Roberge, Avery Stobbe, Michele Edmundson, Robert Jack, Jay Roberge, Ritchie Jack, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Bill, sister Erna Forbes, and niece Linda Forbes.

The family would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts the wonderful care and compassion given to Margot from the staff of

St Martha's Place, Dr. Stephen Shigeishi, and Glen Matthews.

A memorial service for Margot was held on Wednesday, July 4th

at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Banff. Friends were invited to join with the family following the memorial service, at the Col Moore Branch #26, Royal Canadian Legion in Banff, to toast Margot.
