Heinz - "there are no other kinds"
Born to parents Bruno and Angelika Nowatschin on April 8, 1950, Heinz grew up in the small village of Anselfinger near Engen / Hegau, Germany with his younger brother Klaus.
Heinz started his cooking apprenticeship in 1964 at the age of 14 with hopes to leave Germany and travel the world. He met the beautiful, bold and ambitious Hannelore Knopf at the age of 17 and they married in 1973. Little did he know of the adventures that would ensue over the years to come which would include a life-long pursuit of
"trying to keep up" to his beloved Hanna.
The couple lived and travelled in Switzerland, South Africa and Denmark before arriving in the Canadian Rockies in July of 1976. Both found jobs at the renowned Banff Springs Hotel and soon became parents to three wonderful daughters, Liz, Tina and Monika.
Heinz quickly became a pillar to the culinary community of the Banff Springs. With his exceptional talent and leadership qualities, he was promoted to Executive Sous Chef at the age of 35. A great mentor and inspiration to many young chefs over the 37 years of his career, Heinz was a dedicated and hard working man who has left behind an incredible legacy.
When not at the Hotel, Heinz could be found either on the hiking trail, cranking out turns at Sunshine Village on a bluebird day, laying down a mean backhand on the tennis court, speedo-clad on a white sandy beach, or cracking jokes with anyone and everyone who crossed his path. His boisterous laugh could be heard echoing down the Bow Valley. A true Banff legend, Heinz will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
"We're here for a good time, not a long time, so have a good time everyday." -Heinz (and Trooper)
