June Lenore Mary Tye passed away on April 21, 2018. June is greatly missed by daughter Janice and her husband Murray Hanna, and her two much loved grand-daughters Claire Hanna and Gillian Hanna. June's beloved husband of 65 years, Bill, passed away a few months ago. June and Bill were predeceased by their son Howard in 1975. June devoted two years to caring for Howard during his cancer treatments.
June is survived by her sisters Lois Francis and Delia Lamont of Calgary, Joyce Detlefsen of Victoria and Marion Stonell of Edmonton. June was pre-deceased by her brothers Ross, Jack and Don and sisters Rilla, Margaret and Ila.
June was born in Edmonton and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1948 with a BSc - Home Economics. During her university years she enjoyed working for three seasons at the Chateau Lake Louise where she made many friends and hiked all the trails. Following graduation, June completed her internship as a dietitian at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria BC after which she served as head dietitian for three Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals (King George, King Edward and Queen Elizabeth). June met the challenge of maintaining the hospital food services during the major crisis of the Winnipeg Flood of 1950 and she was involved in evacuating patients by row boat. For her exceptional efforts June received special commendation from the City of Winnipeg. In 1951 June was appointed as head dietitian at the new Aberhart TB sanatorium facility on the U of A campus. Later, she was employed as head dietitian with the new Alberta School for the Deaf in Edmonton.
In Calgary, June was a Past President of the Samaritan Club of Calgary, she was active at Christ Church Elbow Park and she served as a Director on the Board of the Calgary Family Service Bureau, Wood's Christian Home and the YWCA of Calgary. During the fundraising for the new YW building in 68-70, June was often heard to say, "It's the girls' turn".
June enjoyed times with friends at bridge, theatre and golfing. She loved to explore new cultures together with Bill during their travel adventures, visiting over 60 countries. June and Bill cherished their many special friends during 50+ years in Calgary, 7 years in Wexford, Ireland, 30 years of winter vacations in Arizona and at their weekend retreat cabin at Harvie Heights. June was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Ranchmen's Club and the Glencoe Club.
June's thoughtful caring and steadfast dedication to her family will be greatly missed. June's family would like to thank Dr. John Michalyshyn, the staff of Origin at Spring Creek and the health care team at the Canmore General Hospital for the care provided to June.
A Celebration of June's life is planned for June 9, 2018 at 12 noon at the Calgary Golf and Country Club, located 1 block west of the intersection of Elbow Drive and 50 Avenue SW. Venue dress code in effect. (No denim wear, please).
Memorial donations may be made to the YWCA of Calgary or a charity of your choice.
