Peacefully, and with her family by her side, Joyce-Mom-Oma
drifted off into the great unknown on January 16, 2018.
Joyce was born on November 27, 1928 in Southampton, a port
on the southern coast of England. Her parents, Maude and George Cooper, sent her to live inland for safety during WWII.
After the war Joyce studied linguistics at the University of Bristol,
and at the Sorbonne in Paris.
In the early '50s Joyce worked at the British Consulate in
Frankfurt, Germany, where she met Vern (then Werner Mrowietz).
They emigrated to Canada and were married in Toronto in 1955.
Their only child, Ann, was born a year later.
Joyce supported the family while Vern completed a teacher's degree from the University of Toronto. She worked for many years at the Algie Lawson Advertising Agency, and then for the rest of her career at the Ontario College of Art. In the '70s Vern and Joyce built a house on the Oak Ridges Moraine near Mount Albert, Ontario, and continued to commute to their jobs in the city.
After retirement, Joyce was able to devote more time to her
passions for gardening, weaving, and travel. Each winter Joyce and Vern flocked down to a cabin on the beach near Englewood, Florida; they were happiest by the water. Wherever they lived, their doors
were always open to a steady stream of neighbours and visitors
from all over the world.
In 2011, in declining health, Joyce and Vern moved west to be
closer to Ann, John, Tate, and Claire. The Morrow/Thornton family would like to thank the many, many talented, generous and compassionate people in the Bow Valley who have cared for us
at Cascade House, the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, and
St. Martha's. You are truly saints.
Joyce's long and full life was blessed with much laughter,
many friendships, and the love of her (small but mighty!) family.
She was a kind and gentle soul, who held onto her British
sense of humour and quiet stoicism to the end. Our hearts
are full of admiration and gratitude for who she was,
and all that she made possible.
Joyce and Vern are now buried at Banff's Mountain View
Cemetery, by the edge of the forest and facing the eternal
beauty of Cascade Mountain.
