With sadness we announce the passing of Janet Plunkett on Monday, August 3, 2009 after a brief battle with an aging heart. She will be solely missed by all those who knew and loved her over the course of her 88 years. Janet was predeceased by Bill, her husband of fifty-one years, in 2006. She is survived by her daughter Sheila MacDonald (Fred Goodman), Salmon Arm; son William Plunkett, Banff; stepsons Sam Plunkett (Sally), Banff; and John Plunkett (Grace), Scotland; grandchildren Shannon Goodman (Barry Wheaton) and Shane Goodman of Vancouver; Kirby Plunkett and Katie Plunkett of Banff; three great-grandsons, Hunter, Hudson, and Harrison Wheaton, and many other relatives in Scotland and Canada.
Born and raised in Ayrshire, Scotland, Janet and her family immigrated to Canada in 1961 and lived in Banff since that time. Family always came first for Janet, and her grandchildren and great-grandsons were the apple of her eye. She was a gifted knitter and seamstress, and her legacy of sweaters and baby outfits will long be cherished. Janet will be fondly remembered by many former staff members of the Fairmont Banff Springs where she worked for a number of years and where she befriended and "mothered" many young workers. Janet and Bill always welcomed family, friends and workmates at their home for memorable barbeques and family gatherings. Her shortbread cookies were famous! Janet loved travelling and she had the pleasure of returning to Scotland on many occasions, and she enjoyed the warm climate in Hawaii during many annual trips there with Bill. Janet supported the Canadian Legion, Banff Branch (Thursday and bingo night especially), and she supported many other community organizations in Banff.
Janet's family would like to thank Dr. Jane Fowke and the staff at Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, and they extend sincere appreciation for the support received from staff at Banff Community Care during their many helpful home visits.
Janet made friends everywhere and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. In memory of Janet, smile at a stranger and say hello. A family service will take place at a later date.
