Long time Canmore resident and beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle and good friend John Joseph "Jack" Thompson passed away peacefully at the Golden Eagle View Care Wing of the Canmore General Hospital after losing his longstanding battle with Alzheimer's.
Jack was born in St. Stephens, New Brunswick, the 4th of 9 children born to parents Harry and Hilda Thompson. He is survived by his
3 brothers, Harry Thompson, Fred Thompson and Kenneth Thompson (Maureen), a sister, Mary Smith, several brother and sister in-laws and numerous nephews and nieces.
Jack was predeceased by his loving wife Bonny Thompson (nee: Larsen), his father Harry, mother Hilda, sister Margaret Thompson, and brothers Arthur, Bill and Al Thompson. He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law and close friend, Arthur Larsen and
brother-in-law Bernie Chamberland.
Jack developed a good work ethic at a very young age while growing up on the family farm in New Brunswick. After graduating from High School in 1950, Jack's first paying job was working for Canadian Cotton Mills, in New Brunswick. In 1953 Jack headed to Toronto where he briefly worked in construction before moving out west in 1954. He moved to Banff, to join his brother Harry, working construction where they apprenticed and obtained their journeyman certification as a stone mason/brick layer along with their younger brother, Fred.
Jack soon started Thompson Masonry. The "Thompson Boys", worked very long, hard hours doing fine stone & brick work on many buildings in Calgary and the Bow Valley over the next 40 years. He was a proud member of the International Union of Bricklayer and Allied Craftworkers.
Jack met Bonny Larsen in 1958 at the "Opera House" in Canmore. They were married on April 28, 1962 and lived between Banff and Calgary for the next 15 years before he moved Bonny into her dream home that Jack built in Canmore, out of brick & stone of course, where they lived until 2008.
Jack was an avid fisherman & hunter and an excellent marksman winning many awards. He was a member of several gun clubs but spent a lot of time and effort in making The Kananaskis Gun and Archery Club what it is today. In recognition of this contribution, Jack was awarded a life time membership. Jack also taught courses in safe handling of a firearm for the Range Safety Officers, the Alberta Hunter Training and anyone wanting to learn.
Jack was a wonderful story teller. His blue eyes sparkled as he told his stories to audiences young and old. He had a special way with young children and was always a favorite with his nieces and nephews as they were growing up. Jack Thompson was a very special man to all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to: Dr. John Michalyshyn and the very dedicated and caring staff of the Golden Eagle View Care Wing of the Canmore General Hospital.
