Jack died peacefully in Canmore Hospital after many months plagued by numerous health issues. Jack is survived by his wife Diana, sisters Eileen and Julie, daughter Katie, grandchild Lily May Bird, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Rochdale, England, Jack moved to Canada after completing his apprenticeship as a Journeyman carpenter and arrived the day the first man landed on the moon. He joined his recently emigrated family in Victoria, BC to begin a new life armed with little more than a few tools, and a broad Lancashire accent which he never lost.
Initially plying his trade alongside his father, also a carpenter, and soon after working on his own, Jack established a solid reputation as a skilled craftsman with a keen eye to detail, a good guy to work with and for, and a man who "got the job done" and got it done right. The all-important workplace values of "true" and "level" also characterized his life. Jack re-settled in Canmore 20 years ago where he established the same reputation, made many friends, married, and remained.
Jack was well loved and will be missed and remembered for many things: his fierce determination; warmth, wit, and humour; generosity and loyalty to friends and family; love of a lively discussion and spirited debate; fondness for the underdog; and unique fashion sense - to name but a few.
In accordance with Jack's wishes there will be no funeral, memorial, or celebration of life. Rather, we will simply having a "Thing" – an informal gathering of friends and family - a time to reminisce, swap stories, and remember the best. Jack's "Thing" took place at the Canmore Legion on Saturday, July 19, 2014.
