Herb MacAulay, loving father, cherished son, and doting brother, passed away at the Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff on May 9
following a brief illness.
Herb was born in Banff on August 22, 1947, to Karin
(née Wallensteen) and Jack MacAulay. He was proud
to be a third generation Banffite, prouder to be the eldest of six children, and proudest to be "Dad" to his son, Currie. Except for a few years in Vancouver he lived almost all of his life in Banff and stayed true to the decade he loved best, the '60s, by valuing ideas, ignoring trends, and insisting on personal freedom. He set his own pace, embodying Thoreau's belief that "To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts."
He enjoyed a varied career working for many years with both Alberta Forestry and Banff Transportation. He was a devoted student of Banff's history and was a long-time volunteer with the Banff Heritage Corporation. He loved good books, deep thought, long walks, blues guitar, esoteric philosophy, easy conversation, heated debate, sumptuous meals, NASCAR, and the Habs. He did not like convention, short haircuts, cats, or blue cheese. He insisted that milk be poured into his cup before hot tea was added – something to do with creating an emulsion – and he was adamant that he could taste the difference. He was as well-read and intelligent as he was wise and kind. He was a good man, he was our Braveheart, and we will miss him terribly.
Along with his beloved son Currie, Herb is survived by his brother John, sisters Karen, Shelley, Jodi (Grant), and Julie Ann, niece Kelsey, nephew Daniel, dozens of Wallensteen and MacAulay cousins, and countless friends, many of whom he had known for most of his life.
Cremation has taken place, and at Herb's request, there will be no funeral. Charitable donations, if desired, can be made to the Red Cross in support of Fort McMurray.
To Dr. Mette Hoegh-Petersen and Dr. Chris Turner, the staff of Bear Street Family Physicians, and the nursing team at Mineral Springs, thank you for your care and compassion during Herb's illness.
He admired intellect and kindness and you graced him with both.
Lastly, from your family, thank you Herb for reminding us
that "not all those who wander are lost."
Godspeed, our precious Viking, until we meet again.
