It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Harry Roberts “Biff” Wheeler, Jr., (b. October 16, 1936 in Montréal) originally of Saint-Jovite, Québec and more recently of Canmore, Alberta. He died peacefully on the 18th of February, 2025, surrounded by family.
Biff was (and forever will be) a son of the Laurentian mountains. He loved coffee at sunrise, geese landing on a lake, hiking, canoeing, cross country skiing, long drives, and a good laugh.
Growing up, he had three heroes: cross country ski legend "Jackrabbit" Johannsen (who personally taught him to cross-country ski), Tom Wood, the founder of Sedbergh School in Montebello (where he learned a love for the outdoors), and his Uncle Tom (who taught him a love of adventure). Biff was grateful for these legendaries, and attributed his long and active life to their invaluable guidance and inspiration.
His life's work was with Gray Rocks Inn, where he started working at the age of 12. Some of his fondest memories were the development of the recreational facilities. He was forever grateful for the incredible work done by the most dedicated and fantastic staff. He always said that it was entirely because of the people working there that the same guests would return, year after year, decade after decade, and across generations. It was a wonderful era!
He is predeceased by his parents Harry Roberts Sr. & Gertrude Ethel Myrle (née Smyth), and brother F.H. “Tom” Jr.
He is survived by his wife Dianne (née Waterman), sister Lucile (Vaughan), children Edward and Jennifer, and four grandchildren.
Tremendous and heartfelt thanks go to the truly exceptional doctors and nurses at the Canmore General Hospital, who provided much more than care for Biff, but also ensured a peaceful, humorous, and compassionate environment during his transition from this life to the next.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Biff’s name can be directed to the Canmore General Hospital (Alberta), the Ste. Agathe Hospital (Québec), or by taking a long walk in his memory.
We love you, dad
