Long time Canmore resident and beloved brother, brother-in-law,
uncle and good friend, Harry Murray Thompson passed away
peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Monday
October 19, 2015 following a lengthy illness.
Harry was born March 12, 1935 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the 5th of 9 children born to parents Harry and Hilda Thompson. He is survived by his brothers Fred Thompson; Kenneth Thompson (Maureen) and their children Cathy Lynn Thompson and Kenny Thompson Jr. (Cathy) along with their children Andrea, Dale and Tristan; a sister, Mary Smith, her daughter Patricia; nephew Thomas Thompson (Teresa) and their children Emma and Seth; sister-in-law Leslie Thompson and nieces Tina and Joanne and children Charlie and Shiloh; and nieces Marjorie, Barbara and Maureen in addition to numerous extended family and friends.
Harry was predeceased by his father Harry, mother Hilda,
sister Margaret Thompson, and brothers Arthur, Jack, Bill
and Al Thompson.
Harry grew up on the family farm in St Stephen where he
developed a very good work ethic along with very good manners
and above-honest disposition; traits which remained with Harry throughout his life.
After graduating from high school, Harry moved out west to Banff in 1953 where he worked construction and was later followed by older brother Jack and younger brothers Fred and Ken. While Ken moved on to Golden, BC in 1960, Jack, Harry and Fred remained in the Bow Valley and obtained their journeyman certification as stone mason/brick layers working long, hard hours doing fine stone & brick work on many buildings in Calgary and the Bow Valley over the next 45 years and were known locally as "The Block Brothers". Harry was a proud member of the International Union of Bricklayer and Allied Craftworkers.
Harry was a former Town Councilor (5 Terms) and former Deputy Mayor of the Town of Canmore. He was always willing to help anyone at any time. After almost 50 years of living and working in the Bow Valley, Harry, along with brother Fred, bought a farm near Bluffton, Alberta
in 2003 where he lived and worked up until his passing.
Harry was very well liked and respected by all those who knew him.
His smile and gentle manner will be missed.
Funeral services for Harry were held on Friday, October 30, 2015
