Harry died at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary on Dec. 8, 2013.
He is survived by his daughter, Della Gray of Harvie Heights and his son, Ian (Kelly) Gray and his grandchildren, Derek (Meryl), Calvin (Bruna) and Erin Sison (Christian) all of Vancouver as well as four great-grandchildren. Harry was predeceased by his wife Edna and his grandchildren, Jerrett and Kera.
Harry was born in Vancouver, B.C. on March 31, 1928. After graduating from Kitsilano High School he joined the British Columbia Forestry Service building roads into Wells Gray Provincial Park, the start of a lifelong love of the mountains. He was an active member of the Mount Seymour Mountaineering Club volunteering with mountain search and rescue.
Harry married Edna Devereaux of Vancouver in 1950. They moved to Calgary and Harry started a career in flooring. He could not leave the mountains and immediately built a cabin in Harvie Heights. Although he ceased active mountaineering fearing injury would jeopardize his career, he, his family and friends spent many wonderful times in Harvie Heights. He never missed an opportunity to accept flooring work in the Bow Valley and to many old timers in the Bow Valley he is affectionately called the "Carpet Man". After the death of his wife in 1992, Harry retired to Harvie Heights where he lived until his recent illness.
A Memorial Service was held in the Bow River Funeral Service Chapel in Canmore on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.
Harry's cremated remains will be taken in the spring to Mount Seymour where he will join his wife in his beloved coastal mountains.
