Harold Waldemar Naffin passed away quietly in the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley of 59 years, sons Shaun (Michelle) and Jeff (Jodie), sister Linda Charlton (Gary), brother Albert Naffin (Terry) sister Hilda Doig, sister Margaret Peterson, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Rudolph, mother Klara, sister Irma Hooker, sister Lily Skov and sister Frieda Utley.
Harold was born on a small farm in Michichi, Alberta. In 1947 the family moved to Drumheller where he lived until 1953 when he moved to Banff to work at Star Service for the summer. Hal was employed by Parks Canada for 36 ½ years and retired in 1995 as a mechanic/foreman. Retirement wasn't his style, and Wally (Harold) began driving a truck for his son Shaun's company in 1997. He continued as a part time employee right up to May 30, 2016.
Music was his life and he played in several bands in the area – The Playboys in the early '60's, The Eldorado Trio in the early '70's and The Eldorado Quartet in the late '70's. The last was the Swillbillies, playing with his son Jeff when functions were held in the Legion.
Flying was his passion, and he became a private pilot in 1967. Eventually, with one partner, he owned a Cessna 172 (VVK).
He enjoyed camping, skiing, ski-dooing, and dirt biking - followed by "Whiskey and Snacks". One of his main hobbies was trimming the big spruce hedge around our property; he had that looking like it had been manicured.
Harold was member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Col. Moore branch in Banff for over 50 years. He loved to socialize with people and always had a smile for everyone.
A memorial service for friends and family was held at the Banff Park Lodge on Tuesday, June 14, 2016.
Service of Interment was conducted prior to the memorial service in Mountain View Cemetery with the family present.
He will be sadly missed by all.
Our sincere thanks to Dr. James Baergen, Dr. Chris Turner, and the Acute Care nursing staff who gave such excellent care in looking after our loved one.
