Gundel Rau

d. December 21, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Kunigunde (Gundel) Rau on December 21, 2015 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

Gundel was a loving mother and incredible friend to all those around her whose lives she touched. Predeceased by her husband Werner in 2013, Gundel is survived by her daughter Iris in Sherwood Park, AB as well as her brother Karl and sister Marianne in Germany.

Gundel was born in Germany, September 16,1940. She became a pharmacist, got married to Werner Rau and immigrated to Canada in 1983. They then moved to Canmore in 1995.

Gundel loved the mountains and the outdoors in Canmore.

Through the Meanderthals, she lead many hikes as well as snowshoeing expeditions. She loved exploring and mapping out new places and was always up for a new adventure. Gundel was also a member of the Bow Valley Stewards, volunteering her time and efforts each summer. Gundel was a classical music lover and played violin and viola equally well with her chamber music group "Poco Rit" . She enjoyed playing bridge and ping pong as well as cooking and baking and frequently had friends over to share this with a stimulating conversation. Gundel enjoyed helping her friends with little chores - watering their flowers, getting their mail, checking their homes while away - you could always count on Gundel.

A gathering of friends and family and Celebration of Life for Gundel was held on Friday, January 22, 2016 in St Michael's Anglican Church hall in Canmore.

Friends wishing to remember Gundel are encouraged to make a donation, in her memory to the Community Supper program, in care of St. Michael's Church, 709 - 7 Street, Canmore T1W 2C3 or to the Bow Valley Food Bank, P.O. Box 8071 Canmore AB, T1W 2T8 (www.bowvalleyfoodbank.ca)
