Eva Kende, BSc, Author, passed away in Canmore with her husband John of 54 years and their son Leslie by her side after a lengthy illness. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Ruth and grandsons Noah and Anthony, as well as a number of cousins on several continents.
Eva immigrated to Canada in 1957. She attended school in Winnipeg and received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and math from the University of Manitoba in 1963. Eva's professional career started as a research biochemist, contributing to a number of published research projects at medical schools in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary. Upon retiring from formal medical research in the early 1980's, she studied computer science at Athabasca University. She then followed another passion and began writing. At first she wrote occasionally for the local newspaper. Eva compiled and perfected a comprehensive guide to Hungarian cooking, self-published as "Eva's Hungarian Kitchen", which she marketed around the world. Two other books followed, "Eva's Kitchen Confidence," as an e-book, and "Snapshots – Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain." Eva appeared on regional television in a number of episodes of a cooking show. She was deeply honoured when she was asked to contribute a model composition for a college English textbook. Eva wrote several published articles and stories, one of which was published in "Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul".
She kept researching her whole life with curiosity and interest, building on her wide base of knowledge. On her website she made available one of the most comprehensive essays on Lactose Intolerance, and made herself a definitive resource on the subject whenever a question arose. Over several decades she became an expert genealogist, carefully documenting the family trees.
Eva was always ready to help. She was an active Canmore volunteer for several decades and she would always take the time to provide mentorship to anyone who asked. Eva was a long-standing member of Canmore's Friends of the Library. Eva and John loved to travel, going on many cruises, road trips and travel throughout Europe. She was a special wife, mother, grandmother, talent and was always courageous.
The Kende family extended an invitation to celebrate Eva's life on Saturday, July 28, 2018 in the Creekside Hall, Canmore Senior's Centre. There was an observance of remembrance followed by refreshments and then an opportunity to share stories and memories
of Eva.
