Edith Sorensen passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11
at the age of 89 after a courageous battle with ALS.
A special thank you to Dr. Metta Hoegh-Petersen, the team at Cascade House, Mineral Springs Hospital and St. Martha's. We are so blessed to have such great care facilities in our small town. The friendship and compassion that was shown to Edith and her family made her prolonged illness seem less daunting.
Edith moved from her home country of Denmark in 1957 directly to Banff to start a new life with her husband Henning and son Carsten.
Her daughter Marian was born in Banff in 1959. Henning worked for Parks Canada and Edith managed Stafford Cabins on the site of which is now Cascade House. Their strong work ethic allowed them, in a few short years, to be able to purchase Thompson Cabins on Beaver Street, naming it Two Twenty Beaver Cabins, which is still in operation today.
Shortly after Henning passed away in 1984, Edith retired and sold the business. She never really retired in the true sense of the word as she kept herself busy with her volunteer work, well into her 70's.
Edith was very active in the community; you could always find her at the Senior's Center and at the Legion on Bingo Nights selling raffle tickets. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for many years as well as the Presbyterian Church.
You could not miss Edith's infectious smile. She could often be seen around town riding her bike and over the past few years walking briskly with her new method of transportation, her walker.
Edith is survived by her son Carsten (Karen), daughter Marian (Tony) four grandchildren: Bjerre (Krystle), Eric (Shayla), Alaina (Jove),
Connor and her great grand daughter, Taliyah. She is also survived
by her sister Gerda (Preben), and many nieces and nephews who all reside in Denmark.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. Martha's at Mineral Springs Hospital.
A small family gathering has taken place to celebrate Edith's
remarkable life.
