Dr. Dennis Charles Evans passed away in the early morning of
August 22, 2017 peacefully with family by his side; the occasion fittingly marked by a rare and captivating celestial event just hours earlier.
He was a singular and exceptional individual, born to Harold Evans and Grace Shannon on September 5, 1926 in the small railway town of Touws River in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Younger brother to Sydney and George, devoted husband to Beverley Myra Hodson, loving father to David (spouse Danièle Matte, daughters Chloe, Emilie, Sophie and Caroline); John (spouse Julie, sons Fletcher and Rhys); Ashley (spouse Ken Mitchell, sons Scott, Logan and Stephen); and Mark (spouse Ping Li, children Tristan and, Emma-Li).
A respected and dedicated orthopaedic surgeon with many years of service to the Toronto East General Hospital and University of Toronto, Dr. Evans' deft care, generous wisdom and resolute professionalism touched and inspired many, whether patients, trainees or colleagues. He was the author of numerous scientific publications, innovator of a surgical device, longstanding director of one of Canada's first independent surgical facilities (and champion of national accreditation standards) and an architect of training certification for the Canadian Association of Orthopaedic Technologists. He also brought his skill and compassion to Nepal and served with Médecins Sans Frontières in Haiti.
Beyond his robust medical career, Dr. Evans' kind reach extended far, including to one Andrew Morosi, a remarkable musical talent discovered as a youth in the hills of Lesotho. At times a carpenter, gentleman farmer, and adventurer, he was above all a man who lived for his family. Unassuming, generous, honourable, Dennis Evans will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family extends sincere thanks and appreciation to the dedicated staff of Origin at Spring Creek Seniors Residence, Canmore Community Care/Home Care, and to Laurie Bell and Ken Mitchell for their endless kind support. Donations can be made, in his memory, to Easter Seals.
There was a gathering of friends and family Celebration of Life on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Origins at Spring Creek Seniors Residence, 808 Spring Creek Drive in Canmore
