Catherine Riva, long-time resident of Banff, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital at the age

of 92 years.

Predeceased by her husband Samuel in 1954, Catherine is survived by her son John (Julie) of Surrey, BC; her daughter Teresa (Frank) Banham of Vilna, AB; three grandsons, five great grandchildren as well as her two brothers Bernard and John Ballek in Outlook, Sask., and her two sisters Justina Cuica in Regina and Elizabeth McHardy in Banff.

Catherine came to Banff in 1945, first working for Hub Barber and Beauty Salon on Caribou Street and then in 1952 opening her own shop, Cathy's Beauty Salon which she operated until 1964 when she decided to stay home and raise her two children. After the children were older, she went back to work with Parks Canada in the visitor's department for 16 years, again retiring and operated a bed and breakfast in her home.

In retirement she also enjoyed an independent life in Banff and the mountains as well as travelling throughout Europe, the Caribbean and several areas in the southern United States and Hawaii. She remained actively independent in the Banff community, enjoying good health until recently.

Funeral Mass was Celebrated Wednesday, April 15, 2015

in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Rockies Parish, in Banff. Following the mass, she was laid to rest with her husband Samuel in the Old Banff Cemetery.
