A true Albertan, Bruce Lawrence Beattie was born in Calgary and was always proud of that fact through his lifetime. His father Frank was employed by Imperial Oil and over the years had been transferred to both Edmonton and Lethbridge, before returning to Calgary. Bruce's mother Farrel moved the family as it grew with his siblings, Al, Patricia and Michael. Bruce completed his education in these cities and then as a young man travelled extensively before returning to Alberta in the early seventies.
Bruce arrived in Banff in the spring of 1973, and worked at Sunshine Village with the maintenance crew. That fall he began employment at the Abominable Ski Shop on Banff Avenue with George Capel where he worked for several years before joining the new company Bow Valley Office Supplies, started up by Anne and Gerry Goulet. Bruce retired from there after several decades of working with many fellow employees that he both admired and respected. Bow Valley Basics had provided him with wonderful friends over the years and a job that he enjoyed.
An avid golfer, Bruce was a member of the men's club at the Banff Springs Hotel for many years, often competing in the club championship rounds. Bruce's circle of friends became his extended family. He looked forward to special events and celebrations with them. But more than anything, it was the "kids" that he most enjoyed. His crusty exterior belied the soft heart inside and he never missed an opportunity to ask about them, and to encourage them in all their endeavors. He was proud to be part of their lives.
Bruce passed away on January 26th at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary after receiving wonderful and caring treatment from the ICU Pod 4 staff. Special thanks to these dedicated professionals and to his long time friends George Paris and Dennis Shuler who helped him pass peacefully and to Anita and Darryl Wurst who were with him at the end.
