Robert Herald Meggs passed away quickly and peacefully at the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital with all his children and grandchildren at his side at the age of 85 years. Raised with his younger brother Bill in Gores Landing on Rice Lake near Peterborough, ON, Bob grew up on the water fishing and boating. He began his university education in business with plans to get involved in the family marina/resort once finished. He came to the Banff Springs Hotel in the mid 1950's for a summer job as a bell hop were he met the very pretty and petite Pauline Papillon. She spoke very little English and worked as an elevator girl in the hotel. They fell in love, changed all their plans for returning to eastern Canada and setup a life in Banff together. They raised their children Renee and Sean in Banff before moving to Harvie Heights where Pauline passed away in 1972.
In the early years, Bob co-founded with the Hann family, a ski shop on Banff Avenue called Mountain SportHause. He spent many years at the Norquay ski hill as a ski patroller and ski instructor with the likes of Johny Prestov and John Wackerle. He also was a packer into Assiniboine, Skoki and Shadow Lake Lodges.
Bob participated for years in the Prune Picker's race
on the Plain Of Six Glaciers and Parker's Ridge.
In his later years, many in the valley remember Bob as the happy taxi driver in Banff, dispensing advice and local knowledge to his patrons. He was a permanent fixture on the front patio of the Canmore Hotel on sunny afternoons chatting with all the locals as they walked by. He became a mentor to many in AA and took great pride in helping all that he could.
Bob is survived by his brother Bill, his children Renee and Sean, his daughter-in-law Kari, his grand children Bryanna, Denver, Marcus, Alexander, and Stephanie.
The family wishes to thank the medical staff of the Banff Mineral Hospital for all their kind care during Bob's final day.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life was held on Friday, November 21, 2014 in St Michael's Anglican Church hall,
709 - 7 Street in Canmore.
