Betty Shellian

Betty Louise Shellian, lifelong resident of Canmore, passed suddenly and peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Dec 4, 2014. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Goldie (Summerhays) Latvala, and her grandmother Jenny Niemi. She is survived by her sister Donna (Kevin) Heath, son Robert (Karina) Shellian, daughter Lindsay (Paul) Gammon and their families. She is also survived by her lifelong best friend Larry Shellian and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren.

Betty was a social butterfly, making many lifelong friendships. She trained at the Foothills Hospital and graduated with a nursing degree. After working at the Foothills she came back to the Canmore Hospital in 1975. A few years later came the loves of her life when she became a mother. Fittingly, she continued on in a career with children working as an EA at Lawrence Grassi and then Canmore Collegiate. Here she developed lasting friendships with co-workers and a special bond with the kids she worked with. Betty spent the last year and a half living with Lindsay and Paul. This allowed her quality time with her grandchildren. She was in her element. Betty was known for her selfless caring for others always putting her family and friends needs before her own. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.

In the last few years, Betty suffered with numerous health issues and was in and out of hospital. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Canmore Hospital for their compassion and support. Betty's Memorial and Celebration of Life was held on Friday,

December 12, 2014 in St. Michael's Anglican Church Hall in Canmore.
