Arthur Richard Bleakney died suddenly in the early evening of April 21, 2012 at the Calgary Foothills Hospital.
Art is survived by his wife of 43 years Margaret; his children Suzanne Shaw (Kelly) and Glenn Bleakney as well as his grandchildren Chantel, Aaron, Jocelyn and Dylan. Art was predeceased by his parents Victor and Elizabeth.
Born in Winnipeg an only child, Art had an active childhood. His father worked as a mechanic for Air Canada, this meant the family moved often. He lived in Moncton, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Brampton. Art spent a lot of his teenage years in Quebec. This is where he met his bride Margaret. They moved out west to Calgary in 1967. There was more work for a young geologist in oil rich Alberta. He worked as a geologist for CanStrat and PanArctic in exploration and research. He was also a consultant Research Scientist for the GSC in their National Energy Program. In 1996 he started Windtower Consulting, a wellsite geology consulting company. This occupied Art until his retirement in 2005.
As Art and Marg raised their family, Art enjoyed many different hobbies and clubs. An ever present member of the Oldtimers hockey league, slow pitch baseball and social clubs for the office. He spent as many weekends as possible hiking and camping in the nearby Rocky Mountains.
In 1995 Art and Marg moved to Canmore, AB to spend any free-time they had hiking, biking, skiing and playing in the majestic mountains. There, Art became a very social and active member in the Senior's groups in town.
Art had been struggling through different health issues over the past 8 years. It is hard to say just what was the final cause of his passing. He is now free from the pain and frustrations of ill health.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial funeral service was held on Friday May 4, 2012 in Our Lady of the Rockies Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 810 – 7 Street, Canmore.
In lieu of flowers we respectfully ask that you make donations, in Art's memory, to the Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation, 1100 Hospital Place, Canmore T1W 1N2.
