It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony Charles Russell. He passed quickly and painlessly on July 4, 2012 in Canmore, Alberta. Anthony was born in Cardston, Alberta on May 24, 1973 to mother, Margaret Hynd, and father, Charlie Russell. He is also survived by the love of his life, his wife, Chris Russell and his vibrant 6 year old angel, his daughter, Zoe Russell. His memory will also be carried on by his step-father, Graeme Hynd, mother and father-in-law, Donna and Ron Nicholls, brothers and sisters-in-law, Curt and Kim Nicholls, Denise and Mark McBee, step-brothers and sister, Peter and Meredyth Hynd, Deland and Amy Hynd, Tamara Hynd, and their families. His extended family and his many beautiful friends will remember him with love.
He spent his youth nestled amongst the Canadian Rockies on his family ranch bordering Waterton National Park. The mountains held something special for him and helped develop his lifelong love of the outdoors. He pursued all activities he could in the wonder of nature, from hiking, rock and ice climbing, road and mountain biking, skiing, fly-fishing and camping.
After high school, in Pincher Creek, he attended the University of Lethbridge, returning to Waterton for summer work. It was here that he met Chris on June 7, 1994 and married her on September 2, 1995.
His love of nature led him to the University of Calgary for another degree to attain his dream of being a park warden. He succeeded at this, as he did at all things, as a warden in Banff National Park. With an interest in law enforcement, he joined the Calgary Police Force in December, 2000 working up in the ranks to detective.
He was blessed with the birth of his daughter, Zoe Mackenzie Russell, on August 5, 2005. This brought out the best in Anthony in becoming the amazing, loving daddy he was and he was able to pass on his love for life and the great outdoors to her.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Canmore Nordic Centre. We, the family, ask that any flowers are outdoor plants in keeping with Anthony's outdoor spirit.
Anybody who wishes, may make a donation, in Anthony's memory, by contacting Sonya Murdoch at bradson@telus.net. All donations will be used to foster the outdoor spirit that Anthony embodied and passed on to Chris and Zoe.
