It is with a great sense of loss but also with a profound gratitude for a life well lived till the age of 106, that the family of Anna Lychowyd announce her death on September 4, 2023. She has left behind her daughter Mary and son-in-law Richard Bryson, her granddaughter Kathyrn Livesey and her husband Mark, her grandson Steven Bryson and his wife Tanya, her great grandchildren Philip, Patrick, Julianna
and Sam, and her nephew Brad Mack.
Anna was predeceased by her son Bohdan, her husbands Nestor Pencak and Steve Lychowyd.
Anna's life was filled with great tragedy but also joy, love of family and her faith. She was a wonderful caring and giving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She always gave great advice to everyone,
had an opinion on everything and never stopped wanting the best for her family.
Anna was born in Seredopilici, Ukraine to Peter and Maria Demchuk. She was the youngest of 5 siblings. She fondly remembered growing up in their small town, then moving to Radihev where she went to school, learned dressmaking and married Nestor, who had a farm there. Bohdan was born in 1940.
Unfortunately WW 2 would interfere with that life when Nestor was killed. Anna and her family then decided to move westward fleeing from the advancing Russian army. While in Austria, Mary was born in 1945. The family ended up in Germany in a displaced persons camp, where tragedy happened again and her son Bohdan died.
Her brother, Steve Demchuk who in the 1920's had emigrated to Canada was able to sponsor the family and they emigrated to Canada arriving in Edmonton in 1948.
In 1953, Anna married Steve Lychowyd, a lovely man who again, tragically died at age 42 in 1956.
Anna devoted herself to Mary and in 1966, welcomed Richard to the family. When Mary and Richard moved to Vancouver from Edmonton, Anna followed them the next year. She bought herself a little bungalow with a lovely garden where she enjoyed the company of many friends, neighbours and of course, her beloved grandchildren. Anna was employed as a seamstress in a ladies dress shop but every day she made sure she was there when the children came home from school, often preparing her special casserole for the family.
When Mary and Richard moved to Banff, Anna again followed and lived in the in-law suite in their house for 20 years. She was happiest when she could have her grandchildren with her, cook and bake for them and sew some incredibly beautiful outfits for her girls.
Anna moved to Cascade House when she was 99. She loved living there, interacting with all the residents and staff. Unfortunately, just after she turned 100, she had a fall and broke her leg which would not heal, so spent a long time in hospital. She moved into St Martha's Place and remained there till her death.
The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff of St. Martha's Place at Mineral Springs Hospital for the kindness and loving care they gave to Anna for many years and especially in her final days.
