Al was born Dec. 18, 1934 in Glasgow, Scotland from which he started his trek to Canmore, Alberta where he passed away on Sept. 1, 2012, as he desired, at the home which he shared with his best friend and loving partner of 44 years, Linda Hammell. Alistair's wishes would not have been realized without the wonderful care of Dr. M. Quinlan and all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Canmore Hospital, Community Care and their many friends.
Alistair grew up in Calgary and after graduation from Art Center College of Design, in California, he moved to Toronto to start his career as an Industrial Designer. It was there he met Linda. In 1978 Alistair and Linda decided to move to Canmore to be closer to his passion of downhill skiing and road biking, whichever the season demanded
In his career, he was a Director for the Exhibition Design Division of Stewart & Morrison and was responsible for the development of major pavilions at Expo '67, Montreal; Expo '70, Osaka, Japan and other major exhibitions. In 1975 he decided to start his own company, Alistair Justason Design. During his 34 years in Canmore, he had many varied and interesting clients, including the Towns of Canmore and Banff along with many local, regional and provincial projects. His biggest challenge was a joint partnership creation of the pageantry for all the venues for the
1988 Winter Olympics.
Al raced Formula Atlantic cars in Eastern Canada for the Canadian Championship for 10 years across Canada and the Northern U.S. In his quest for continually trying to go fast, with style, the move to Canmore was to fulfill his passion. Al and Linda received a lot more than that through the wonderful people and friends they found in Canmore.
Al was cremated and did not wish any service or memorial. His ashes will be taken by Linda to some of his favorite skiing and cycling spots in and around Canmore.
