Alison Hankins died peacefully October 1, 2009 surrounded by her family. Together we shared our love, memories, and music all day long until she closed her eyes and left us.
Alison leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Gerald, and her children Catherine (Eddy Beck), Peggy Nicholson (Bob), Barbara (Steve Izma), Paul (Brenda), and Jennifer (Shane Longman). Pre-deceased by her brother Donald Matthews in 1996, she is survived by her elder brother Richard Matthews. Sixteen grandchildren will each miss her love and encouragement.
Born January 12, 1927 in Calgary to Charlie and Grace Matthews, Alison graduated from Western Canada High School in 1944. She received her Bachelor of Arts from University of Alberta in 1949 and her Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary in 1963. Alison and Gerald's strong Christian faith was pivotal in all aspects of their lives together in Calgary, England, Nepal, and Canmore. Alison taught with the Calgary Board of Education before moving to Nepal with Gerald in 1974. She volunteered throughout her life, from setting up a medical library in Kathmandu to visiting those in need and serving as a co-facilitator with visually impaired persons in Canmore. Passionate about her family, she enjoyed music, reading, Scrabble, playing cards, and hiking despite her hip replacement. Though legally blind for 20 years, she won gold medals in photography competitions, continued to knit countless prize-winning sweaters, and baked fruitcakes. She nurtured and was nurtured in turn by the warm fellowship and worship at St. Michael's Church.
A memorial service was held on Monday, October 5, 2009 in Canmore.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alison's name to United Mission to Nepal c/o St. Michael's Church, 709 7th St, Canmore, Alberta, T1W2C3.
